HOLLAND COUNCIL ON AGING
Minutes of meeting held on May 4, 2011

        
The meeting was opened at 10:15 a.m. by Chairman Sue Sanders

PRESENT:  COA members: Diane Balderelli, Earl Johnson, Brad Noble, Jack Reed, and Susan Sanders.  Others: Senior Center Director Margaret Crock, Outreach Worker Deb Tierney, Manager Don Sanders, and Linda Artruc.

ABSENT:   Lowell Nixon and Olive Nixon.
        
MINUTES:  Motion by Diane to accept the April 6, 2011, minutes was approved.

REPORTS

OUTREACH WORKER – Deb reports that our personal trainer is booked for May 18, 25 and June 1.  We need to recruit people for this activity, at least to be evaluated.  She has applied for the license to show movies at the Center, the fee funded by a grant.  There are conferences and board trainings coming up.  She urges attendance to gain knowledge.  The Memorial Day breakfast will be held again this year at the junior high from 7:30 to 11:00 a.m. on May 27.  Veterans, spouses, children and friends are all welcome, even from towns outside the Tantasqua region.  Call Mrs. Polito at the junior high – 508-347-7381 – by May 20th to sign up.  The Holland Memorial Day ceremony will be on May 30th, commencing at the elementary school, marching to the cemetery, then to the Senior Center for light refreshments.  Deb needs assistance with phone calling to all seniors in town, to facilitate the enhanced 911 emergency system.  The deadline is the end of May.  Valerie Ebersold has agreed to help out.  She will be in the Senior Center office on May 9th and 10th to make calls.  I will need HP 21 printer cartridges soon.  She would love to have a new printer for the office at some point.  My current printer is very limited in what it can do and is very time consuming.  VOC is allowing me to bring the desktop copier I use in Palmer to this office until the next fuel assistance starts in November.  Tuesday, May 24th, there will be a lunch and presentation on “From Farm to Table at Overlook.  The menu will include fresh garden produce.

SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR: Margaret Crock.  In April, 1040 contacts were made and 130 seniors were served.  301 attended the Center, 106 attended congregate meals.  The balance Includes: Intergenerational activities (205), COA meeting (12), bone density/Harrington/AVADA (13), senior tax work off (16), cards & games (67), exercise (73), Wii (3), stained glass (56), entertainment (24), speakers (16), crafts (21), computer (11), gardening (4), veterans’ agent (4), meetings (18), phone calls (90).

SENIOR TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM: Margaret Crock - As March 31, 2011, the Senior Center has used the program in the amount of $4,474.00, the Assessor’s office $276.00, tax collector $554.00, Town Clerk $628.00, and Holland Elementary School $1,248.00.  Total YTD is $7,180.00.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE:  Regular programs:  Lunch is served every Monday as well as on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month – reservations, please.  Monday Veterans Services Agent at noon – reservations needed; Mah Jongg at 10:00 a.m.; Tuesday Chair Yoga from 10:00 to 11:00 with Eva.  Small fee per class.  Stained glass classes from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. Fee: $15. /month.  Call Tom Baltazar 413 245-3163 to register; craft class 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. with Linda Artruc, Activities Coordinator. Wednesday 10:00 a.m. Arthritis Foundation exercise program with Eva Pittsinger; COA meeting on the 1st Wednesday at 10:15; Tai Chi from 3:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. with David Masera, small fee per class; craft classes with Linda Artruc and guest artisans 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Thursday Computer classes 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. with Linda, and Cribbage from 12:15-3:00 p.m.  Zumba coming in April, Thursdays 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.  Weekdays:  Card games, scrabble and puzzles available daily.  We have some activities after 3:00 p.m. to accommodate those who work.  We have exercise equipment available Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  No fee.  In May a personal trainer will come in to evaluate 20 people who are interested in using the equipment.  May 13 all day Town workshop.   May 16 12:30 – 12:30 Attorney Todd Ratner will speak about senior financial planning.  Please call ahead for brief individual service.  May 18, 25, and June 1 – Personal training assessments (limit of 20 people) – FREE – call for appointment.  June – June 1, AVADA.  Call for appointment. Plan for a Tea Party with Linda Artruc (12:30 – 2:30).  Date TBA.  We are considering movie nights on Thursday.  Let us know if you are interested – 245-3163.

FINANCIAL:  Brad Noble, Treasurer - March report includes:  Receipts: GSSSI $630.00, gifts totaling $300.00, GSSSI Title III grant $2,938.00, and formula grant – 2nd half - $1,750.00.  Telephone: $71.24,
water testing $15.00, exercise classes $60.00, Richard Clark $100.00, bldg. supplies and repairs $250.00, trash pickup $35.40, National Grid $61.20, newsletter printing/mailing $148.27, Citizens Security $75.00, exterminator $165.00, GSSSI mileage $27.00, Osterman propane $591.70, salaries $2,042.50.  

MANAGER:  Don Sanders – Don reports the septic system has been pumped out and the inspector came for termite inspection and prevention.  Picnic tables will go outside this month and the horseshoe pit will be set up.  The garden is coming along and the building is running fine.  Deb mentioned that the Friends want to have a spaghetti supper in June.  They meet tonight and will get in touch with Don.

Motion by Jack to accept the above verbal and printed reports was approved by the Council on Aging.

OLD BUSINESS   The streetlight has been installed at the head of the driveway.  Diane will call Foxwoods about a trip there for us.  Ken would like $200.00 worth of fertilizer for the yard.   Motion by Jack to approve $200.00 for fertilizer was unanimously approved.

NEW BUSINESS:  Board training sites in June was distributed.  

Motion to adjourn was made by Earl at 10:54 a.m. by Earl and was unanimously carried.
